Signs ‘O’ The Times #2: Fantasy Haircuts/It’s Coffee Time - North Hollywood, CA

Finally Together

Located outside my old hood of Valley Village in NoHo, these signs represent the beauty of juxtaposition. Together they seem to be announcing to all fantasy haircuts that it’s coffee time. Let’s also take a moment to consider how great a haircut must be to embody your deepest haircut fantasy?

Either way I imagine nothing goes together better than a fantasy haircut with a cup ‘o’ coffee, excuse me, a gourmet cup ‘o’ coffee - a fact that is clearly demonstrated by gourmet being written right there on the mug, if you weren’t sure.

INOCHI - YOU ARE ALIVE!

I have always had an issue with video art. Usually the artist at the helm of a piece of video art does not have the same strength within the medium that an actual filmmaker has, because of this, the piece, which generally requires me to sit down for a period of time in a museum, is lackluster and amateurish at best. One can only say the opposite for Inochi, a piece of video art by contemporary Japanese Pop-Artist (a style dubbed as Superflat), Takashi Murakami.

You may know his artwork from Kanye West’s newest album Graduation or Murakami’s most recent venture with Louis Vuitton (both of which are showcased at his retrospective currently at the MOCA, going insofar as having a Vuitton store within the exhibit.) but what you should know Murakami for is his sculpture and video work. Rarely does one have the pleasure of seeing a video so provocatively strange to the point of being borderline disturbing, while simultaneously being extremely hilarious, and remarkably well made. With out further ado, Inochi:

You are alive gets me every time. Inochi (his own website is still under construction), along with Anime characters shooting milk from one breast into the other and a naked woman transforming into a jet, are all on display at the MOCA until  Febuary 11, 2008 and just to show you how helpful I am the MOCA is free every Thursday from 5-8 which really gives you no good excuse not to go.

The Cadillac and Beetle Ranches - Amarillo and Conway, TX

Recently I made the long journey from Maine to Phoenix via the open road. The unfortunate part of long road trips like that is no matter how many places you want to stay at or print off of roadfood.com to eat at, because of the long hours spent driving, you don’t always end up where you want to be.

Such a stop was Conway, TX outside of Amarillo. Having to stop there after some much needed rest, upon waking we discovered a lesser known, albeit not quiet as exciting treasure. A must see stop for us was the Ant Farm’s Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo but unbeknownst to myself, Conway had it’s own variation of the Cadillac Ranch: The Beetle Ranch.

Frank Lloyd Wright Dance Club - Koreatown, CA

 Blocktastic

I didn’t know what to make of it. While trying to get on the I-10 from Western, I did a double take thinking I saw a building, no less what looked like a club, with the same textile block pattern from Frank Lloyd Wright’s Ennis-Brown House. I had never heard of a Frank Lloyd Wright building in the area so I decided to investigate.
